Reset Passphrase & Admin Account
Reset the station passphrase and admin password to gain full control of a Niagara station.
The Situation
You’ve been given a station that you don’t own.
You don’t have the passphrase or admin credentials, so you cannot run it or make changes.
Why Can’t I Open or Run the Station?
The station is protected by an encrypted passphrase.
Without it, Niagara cannot read the station files or allow the station to run.
1. Open the Station File Offline
- Expand the File System: User Home → stations
- Double-click the station’s config.bog file.
- The station opens in offline mode.
- Click the padlock icon in the top bar.
The padlock provides special actions to unlock or modify the station file.
2. Change the File’s Passphrase
- Click the padlock and select “Change the file’s passphrase”.
- Enter a new passphrase.
- Click Update.
- Save the BOG file using the disk icon.
Important
This action resets ALL passwords stored in the station file (user accounts, drivers, MQTT connections, etc.) to empty.
- The admin account remains unchanged for now.
- Be prepared to re-enter all passwords again.
3. Reset the Admin Account Password
- Expand: Config → Services → UserService → admin
- Edit the Password.
- Enter a new password, for example: Manager123!!
- Save the station using the disk icon.
Always save your changes before proceeding.
Save the BOG File
Click the Save BOG file icon or right-click and select Save.
- Purple or blue: Saved
- Yellow: Unsaved
4. Copy and Start the Station
- Go to: Platform → Station Copier
- Copy the station from left to right.
- It will no longer ask for the passphrase if the passphrase matches this machine.
- Select Start after install, untick Auto Start, and then click Finish.
Wait for the station to start and show a running status.
5. Log In and Take Control
- Double-click the station in the list.
- Enter the new admin password you set.
- You are now in the station.
You now have full control of the station.
Reconfigure and re-enter any passwords that were reset.
Best Practice
- Always take a backup before making any changes.
- Use a strong passphrase and keep it recorded securely.
- Understand the impact: all embedded passwords will be cleared.
- Document any custom passwords you re-enter.
Important Warning
Resetting the passphrase clears all stored passwords in the station file.
This includes drivers, services, brokers, REST connections, and user accounts.
Be prepared to re-enter them.
Key Takeaway
Reset the passphrase to unlock the station, reset the admin password to gain access, and you’re back in control.
Proceed carefully and always keep a safe backup.
