How to Find a PC’s Host ID for a Niagara Demo License

July 10, 2026

When requesting a Niagara demo license, your supplier may ask for your PC’s Host ID. This Host ID is unique to your machine and is required for licensing.

There are two simple ways to locate your Niagara Host ID and obtain a demo license from your supplier:

  1. Run the command to get the Host ID.
  1. Note the Host ID from the output.
  1. Provide the Host ID to your supplier.
  1. Receive your demo license.

Method 1: Using the Niagara Console

The quickest way to find your PC’s Host ID is by using the Niagara Console.

Go to the Niagara folder and open a Console. Then run the following command:

nre -hostid

The Niagara Runtime Environment will launch and display your Host ID.

Example output:

Niagara Runtime Environment (NRE)

Version: 4.13.1.16
Java: 17.0.8 64-bit

Host ID: a1b2c3d4e5f6

NRE started successfully.

Once the Host ID is displayed, provide it to your supplier to request a demo license.

Method 2: From the License File

You can also locate the Host ID in an existing license file on your PC.

Go to the C drive of the machine and open the Niagara folder. Select your Niagara version, then open the:

security\licenses

folder.

Right-click the relevant license file and choose Edit with Notepad or Notepad++

The file will open and display your Host ID and license details.

Example license file:

# Niagara License File
# Generated on 2024-05-15

[License]
HostId=a1b2c3d4e5f6
Version=4.13
Issued=2024-05-15
Expires=2025-05-15
Type=DEMO
Seats=1

# Demo license – expires annually

The file shows your Host ID, the Niagara version, the date the license is valid up to and including, and whether the license has an expiration date. Demo licenses typically expire annually.

Key Takeaway

Use:

nre -hostid

in the Niagara Console.

This returns the unique Host ID for your machine.

Give the Host ID to your supplier to receive your demo license. Alternatively, you can check an existing license file inside the:

security\licenses

folder.

Keep this Host ID safe — it is unique to your PC and required for licensing.

Need a Niagara Demo License?

Provide your PC’s Host ID to your supplier so the correct demo license can be generated.
