Tyrrell Building Technologies’ IONA Red standardises on Red Hat Device Edge

December 11, 2025

Delivering a cybersecurity, fully manageable edge controller straight from the factory, IONA Red reduces integration complexity and empowers enterprise-scale building automation.

LONDON – 10 December 2025 – Tyrrell Building Technologies (TBT) Group launches IONA Red, an enterprise-scale building controller now shipping on Red Hat Device Edge, with Red Hat Enterprise Linux pre-loaded and certified at the factory.

Unveiled at the Smart Buildings Show (Excel London), IONA Red standardises on Red Hat Device Edge to deliver enhanced, out-of-the-box cybersecurity, stability, and more seamless integration capabilities for modern smart building management systems. Red Hat Device Edge combines Red Hat Enterprise Linux with a supported distribution of MicroShift, a Red Hat-led open source community project and lightweight Kubernetes container orchestration solution derived from the edge capabilities of Red Hat OpenShift.

This collaboration marks a significant leap forward for intelligent infrastructure. IONA Red is designed to meet the urgent demand from both facilities and IT managers for a controller that operates as a trusted, manageable node on the corporate network.

Powered by Red Hat Device Edge with integrated Red Hat Enterprise Linux, IONA Red enables organisations to deploy, update and scale their building automation with the same rigour applied to core IT assets, effectively bridging the gap between operational technology (OT) and enterprise IT strategy.

“Intelligent infrastructure requires a foundation that’s robust and adaptable,” said Kelly Swift, senior director, Industrial Business at Red Hat.

“Leveraging Red Hat Device Edge and harnessing the power of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, IONA Red brings the enhanced security, stability and lifecycle management capabilities directly into the operational technology environment to empower organisations with greater flexibility, control, and confidence when managing smart building systems.”

Engineered for the demands of modern enterprise

IONA Red goes beyond traditional BMS controllers by addressing specific challenges faced by facilities managers and IT departments:

  • Trusted security and stability: With Red Hat Enterprise Linux at its core, IONA Red comes with certified security standards and a platform that’s trusted in critical environments around the world.
  • Automatic, zero-disruption updates: Firmware, features and critical security patches are delivered more seamlessly over-the-air. This eliminates service calls, so systems are protected against emerging threats in real-time, and performance is maintained with no manual intervention.
  • Enhanced scalability on optimised hardware: Powered by an Intel® Atom processor and featuring 24 onboard I/O points, dual Ethernet and RS485 ports, IONA Red is built for demanding applications. Its embedded LoRaWAN gateway and software tools, including native MQTT broker, can support hundreds of wireless LoRaWAN sensors, making it a cyber secure central hub for a scalable IoT architecture.
  • An all-in-one IoT solution: IONA integrates MQTT brokers, LoRaWAN server, the Niagara Framework®, and other critical containerised applications into a single device. This simplifies architecture, reduces installation costs by up to 75%, and enables easy retrofitting.

“IONA Red is the only cybersecurity controller that’s built for enterprise as much as smart buildings,” said Ged Tyrrell, Chief Executive Officer and founder of Tyrrell Building Technologies.

“By standardising on Red Hat Device Edge, IONA Red can integrate more seamlessly into broader digital strategies to speak the language of IT, supporting modern protocols and designed to work with cloud platforms and analytics engines. IONA Red, powered by Red Hat Device Edge, reframes facility costs and transforms them into business assets.”
